In Malaysia, the term “independent” film usually is just code for really slow, overwrought and boring. I did not think much of James Lee’s “My Beautiful Washing Machine”. I admired the intent more than the actual effort. Still, to be supportive of our local film industry, at least Lee has been striving to tell thoughtful, original stories rather than the formulaic or shamelessly derivative crap the industry usually churns out.
